The Specifics of Dry Needling

Looking for an effective treatment for muscle pain and tension? At Brookside Chiropractic Clinic, we offer Dry Needling Therapy to relieve discomfort, improve muscle function, and support tissue regeneration.

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a procedure where thin monofilament needles are inserted into skin or muscle to decrease pain, improve muscle function, and aid in tissue regeneration. The needle is “dry” because it does not involve injecting a medicine like getting a shot (wet needling).

How Does It Work?

Integrative dry needling is not acupuncture. It is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular system. A very fine filament needle is inserted through the skin and into the deeper tissues that have inflammation, swelling, and painful trigger points. The stimulation from the needle will improve blood flow, release shortened tissues, normalize the inflammatory response, and centrally mediate your pain.

What Conditions Can Be Treated?

Dry Needling can be effective for most neuromusculoskeletal conditions. These include, but are not limited to neck, back, and shoulder pain, arm pain (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, golfer’s elbow), migraines and tension-type headaches, jaw pain, and leg pain (sciatica, hamstring strains, calf tightness/spasms).

How Will I Feel After Dry Needling Treatment?

This will vary but many patients experience immediate relief of their symptoms and an increase in range of motion. Soreness can also be a common response from the needling but does not occur in all people. The soreness, if present, will usually last 1-2 days. The use of heat and light massage and movement will be beneficial. Mild bruising may occur at the needling sites and is more prevalent in certain parts of the body.
